On February 9-11, 2017, AMTE hosted our Twenty-First Annual Conference in Orlando, FL. The conference marked the 25th Anniversary of AMTE and was attended by more than 600 people. We had a record number of presenters, 496, who provided many outstanding sessions. There were also numerous opportunities for those attending to meet and share ideas with one another.
At 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, we began the conference welcoming a panel moderated by Ed Silver, University of Michigan. Panel members included Elizabeth Burroughs, Montana State University; Christine Franklin, University of Georgia; and Perla Myers, University of San Diego. The panel discussed K-12 teacher preparation from multiple perspectives across the mathematical sciences. On Friday, Marilyn Strutchens, Auburn University, gave this year’s Judith E. Jacobs Lecture. She discussed access, equity, and empowerment matters related to mathematics education.
During the conference, materials and information of interest to members were available from ETA hand2mind, GraphLock, Information Age Publishing (IAP), The Math Learning Center, National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics (NCSM), National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Pearson, TODOS: Mathematics For All, and Vosaic. We thank each of these groups for contributing to the success of this conference.
At a Thursday evening reception, more than 100 graduate students and early career faculty had an opportunity to meet each other and AMTE leaders. Thank you to ETA hand2mind, Information Age Publishing, and NCTM for supporting the reception.
On Friday morning, the Advocacy Breakfast was led by Della Cronin from Washington Partners, LLC; Karen King from the National Science Foundation; and Ken Krehbiel from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The panel members talked about how they approach advocacy in various contexts and responded to questions from the audience.
At the Business Meeting on Saturday, members were encouraged to make plans to attend the Twenty-Second AMTE Conference, which will be held at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston, TX on February 8-10, 2018. Please see an announcement about the Call for Proposals on the AMTE website.
