AMTE Members are invited to submit potential Emerging Issues to the Advocacy Committee (AC).
In considering whether an issue constitutes an Emerging Issue, the AC will consider the following criteria.
Relevance
Related to AMTE’s broader mission to promote the improvement of mathematics teacher education, K-12
The issue is in the news and/or relevant to the present and near future
Priority
Impending decisions/actions need to be made - E.g., Release of new standards for teacher preparation or comments on policy documents
Reach
Due to AMTE’s scope as a national organization, emerging issues should have a national significance.
State-level issues will likely first be taken up by state affiliates, but should still be reported so we can recognize when they rise to the level of national significance.
Equity
Issues that may further harm communities of underrepresented and historically marginalized people should be considered. Moreover, the implications for equity related to any emerging issue that we tackle must be discussed.
If the AC decides to take up an issue, what will they do next?
- Once we define the issues and aspects of it, we might invite the research and equity committees to inform the membership about that issue.
- We might also further define the facets of the issue. For example, if teacher retention issues is an emerging issue, one facet of that issues is the increase in alternative certification programs.
- We may directly disseminate information to make others’ aware of the issue.
