Call for AMTE's 2018 Awards

As we look forward to the 2018 Annual Conference, there are a few minor changes that are occurring with the timelines associated with the AMTE Awards Committee.  With the truncated schedule, it is necessary for the Committee to change some of the due dates related to individual awards. Below you will find a list of the current awards including the newly established due dates. Full calls and nomination forms for each of the awards can be found on the AMTE website.

2018 Conference Travel Scholarships

The Susan Gay Graduate Student Conference Travel Scholarship, named after Susan Gay in honor of her extraordinary service to AMTE over many years as conference director, president, secretary, and board member-at-large, was established to provide graduate students financial support to attend the AMTE Annual Conference. Each year a minimum of four graduate students will receive the award, which will cover the cost of graduate student early registration and an additional $400 to offset the cost of attending the conference. To qualify, one must be a doctoral student making steady progress toward completion of their degree. Applications will be screened initially based on the eligibility of the application and then put into a lottery based on geographic location.

Application Process:

Graduate students can fill out an application for the Susan Gay AMTE Conference Scholarships online on the AMTE website. The deadline for completed applications is July 15, 2017.

Approximate Timeline:

  • July 15, 2017: Applications due.
  • September 1, 2017: Awardees named and notified.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program in mathematics education or a related field (e.g., curriculum and instruction).

2018 Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics Teacher Education Award

The Board of Directors of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators has established an Award for Recognition of Excellence in Mathematics Teacher Education, to be awarded annually to a mathematics teacher educator of national recognition at the Annual Meeting of the AMTE. The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in each area of mathematics teacher education (teaching, service, scholarship). The recipient will give a featured presentation at the AMTE Annual Conference in the year he/she receives the award.

The 2018 Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics Teacher Education Award is intended to recognize a colleague for a unique contribution in teaching that has made a significant and lasting contribution to the pedagogy of mathematics teacher education. The nominee shall have demonstrated innovative practices in teaching and commitment to mathematics preservice and/or inservice teacher education through one or more of the following areas:

  1. Implementation of effective and innovative teaching practices;
  2. Demonstration of innovative teaching methods (e.g., publications, materials, video);
  3. Recipient of awards in teaching.

Nomination Process:

AMTE members can nominate a mathematics teacher educator who meets the criteria for the particular focus area (service, teaching, scholarship). Self-nominations will not be considered.

The committee will review applications in an electronic format; all application materials should be submitted as a single PDF file. The file should be uploaded to the AMTE Awards website.

Deadline for Nominations:

Nominations for the Excellence in Teaching Award must be received by June 15, 2017.

2018 Early Career Award

The Board of Directors of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators has established an Early Career Award. The Early Career Award will be given on an annual basis, and the recipient recognized at the annual meeting of the AMTE. The purpose of this award is to recognize a mathematics teacher educator who, while early in his/her career, has made distinguished contributions and shows exceptional potential for leadership in one or more areas of teaching, service, and/or scholarship.

Criteria:

The nominee for the Early Career Award should be a mathematics teacher educator serving in the field no later than 10 years after receipt of a doctoral degree. The Early Career Award is intended to recognize a colleague’s contributions in a program of teaching, service, and/or scholarship within the first decade after receiving a doctoral degree. We invite nominations that highlight an individual’s innovative contributions in one or more areas of teaching, service, and/or scholarship.

Nomination Process:

AMTE members can nominate a mathematics teacher educator who meets the criteria for eligibility. Self-nominations will not be considered. The three areas of teaching, service, and scholarship shall be weighted equally in the evaluation of the nomination materials. Nominees do not need to demonstrate exceptional work in every area, and may be considered for exemplary work in only one area. The committee will review applications in an electronic format; all application materials should be submitted as a single PDF file using the AMTE Award Nomination Form.

Deadline for Nominations:

Nominations for the Early Career Award must be received by June 15, 2017.
