A specialization in Mathematics and Science Education (MSED) is offered in the PhD program of the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership (https://education.umd.edu/academics/programs/graduate/mathematics-and-science-education-phd). Four foundational courses in mathematics education (https://education.umd.edu/research/centers/mathed/graduate-degrees/doctoral-degree/doctoral-program-courses), as well as coursework in mathematics, learning theory and research methodologies. Electives allow for coursework in educational leadership, urban education, evaluation design, college teaching, or other areas relevant to the student's goals. Students must pass comprehensive exams to advance to candidacy, as well as complete a doctoral dissertation to graduate. Elementary, middle grades, secondary, or college level mathematics education may be emphasized in this program (see alumni dissertations: https://education.umd.edu/research/centers/mathed/people/alumni). Qualified candidates should have K-12 or postsecondary mathematics teaching experience, or other relevant experience in mathematics education (e.g., research, curriculum development). Candidates may apply with or without a Masters degree in a mathematics education or mathematics-related field by the start of the doctoral program.
The Center for Mathematics Education (CfME@UM: education. umd.edu/mathed/) is home for mathematics education doctoral students and faculty. CfME offers monthly colloquia during the academic year, as well as social events and a series of committees that attend to the quality of students' experiences in the program. Full time students work 20 hours a week in teaching and research assistantships. Many of these assistantships are organized by CfME and include opportunities for engagement in teacher preparation programs for K-8, 4-9, and 7-12 teacher candidates, as well as teaching mathematics in the university's Mathematics Department and participation in faculty research projects. Since 2007, CfME has also supplemented departmental stipends with the Fey-Graeber Fellowship Program.
