New Joint Position Statement by AMTE and ASSM on Asset-Based Perspectives in Mathematics Education

We are excited to announce a significant joint position statement between the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM) and the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) titled Asset-Based Perspectives in Mathematics Teaching and Learning. This collaborative statement emphasizes the critical need for educators to adopt asset-based practices and perspectives in mathematics teaching and learning. You can access the statement online here on the AMTE website.

The joint position statement highlights that asset-based perspectives are essential for fostering positive mathematical identities and enhancing students' mathematics learning. By recognizing and leveraging the diverse strengths and abilities that students bring to the classroom, educators can create more inclusive and effective learning environments. To achieve this goal, it is crucial for teacher educators and state supervisors of mathematics to deepen their understanding of asset-based perspectives. This understanding will support shifts toward more student-centered teaching approaches, ultimately helping all students succeed in mathematics.

The AMTE Board of Directors would like to thank the writing team that worked on this statement and the many members who provided feedback on two early drafts of this statement.

Stay tuned for more details on how this joint position statement will influence the future of mathematics education and our ongoing commitment to equity and excellence in teaching and learning.
