Affiliate Connections Committee Update
We are pleased to announce the first group of winners for the Affiliate Award. The awardees are drawn from all affiliates in your region who are in good standing, with one recipient per region. To be in good standing the affiliate must have submitted their dues by the due date, have an updated AMTE Affiliate web page, and have a president who is currently a member of AMTE. The affiliates that have met this criteria in your region are put in for the drawing. The five winners are Teachers of Teachers of Mathematics - Oregon, Association of Maryland Mathematics Teacher Educators, Pennsylvania Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators, Illinois Math Teacher Educators, and Kentucky Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. Each of these affiliates receive $80 to spend to support their organization. Congratulations to all.
In addition, another round of congratulations goes to our two new affiliates: Nevada Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators in the West Region and New York State Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators in the Northeast Region. Welcome! Go to the AMTE Website to find out more information about each of these new affiliates. If you are interested in beginning an affiliate in your region, please reach out to a close regional representative or Pam Bailey, AVP Affiliates (see info below).
Affiliate News
AMTEC (Connecticut)
Greetings AMTE community! The Associated Mathematics Teacher Educators in Connecticut (AMTEC) will hold its annual Business Meeting in March, once again as a virtual event. We plan to bring together district personnel to discuss several cross-over topics, such as math placements, clinic experiences, and teacher training. We will also be holding elections for multiple positions.
In other work, we have been collaborating with two other state mathematics education leadership groups, ATOMIC (our NCTM Affiliate ATOMIC) and CCLM (our Connecticut Council of Leaders of Math, also an affiliate), to produce a math education equity position statement. We hope it will offer a shared vision and prompt discussions about moving mathematics education in the state forward in productive ways for all our students. We expect to have it shared with membership later this spring.
Questions and inquiries can be sent to amteconnecticut@gmail.com.
AMTE-NV (Nevada)
AMTE-NV was established on January 21, 2022. We are excited to get to know other mathematics teacher educators in Nevada and Northern California. Our major goal this year is to find ways to support mathematics teacher educators in our region, share stories about teaching, and find ways to support each other. Please see our Facebook Page for updates: https://www.facebook.com/AMTENV.
Missouri Mathematics Association for the Advancement of Teacher Training (MAT)2 continues to encourage and support the development of excellent mathematics teachers in Missouri. In January, a new leadership team came on board, Stefanie Livers, associate professor at Missouri State University (President), Sam Otten, associate professor at the University of Missouri (Vice-President), and Amber Candela, associate professor at University of Missouri–St. Louis (Vice-President Elect), with Jenni Wall, associate professor at Northwest Missouri State University (Past President) providing leadership support. Adam Harbaugh, associate professor at Missouri State University will remain as Treasurer. This year (MAT)2 will focus on the recruitment and retention of mathematics teachers at all levels. Additionally, (MAT)2 is planning a virtual summit in May.
VA-AMTE (Virginia)
Greetings from the Commonwealth of Virginia. During Fall 2021 and Spring 2022 semesters, the board has met and will continue to meet on a regular basis this spring to revisit the AMTE 2024 Goals and our Constitution to adjust roles and responsibilities to better serve our membership. We are planning a spring symposium that will be modified from our previous symposiums. The research section will include a space to support PhD students along with mathematics educators’ research and include a space for teaching practices. The Symposium will conclude with a membership meeting in which the board will provide an update on the organization and present and provide open discussion about the modifications to the VA-AMTE structure prior to a vote. The day and time will be on our webpage, https://sites.google.com/view/va-amte/home, please watch this space.
Managing your Affiliate Page in the AMTE Affiliates Directory
Is your affiliate’s page in the AMTE Affiliates Directory up to date? One representative from each affiliate can be granted access to edit that affiliate’s information in the online directory. Each affiliate page includes an overview section that can link to the affiliate website, a list of affiliate leaders, and a section for additional information. To find out more about managing your affiliate’s webpage, go to https://amte.net/affiliates/manage.
