AMTEC (Connnecticut)

The Connecticut chapter of AMTE, AMTEC – the Associated Mathematics Teacher Educators in Connecticut, hosted its spring conference and business meeting on March 6, 2020 at the University of Hartford. We had an intense and productive discussion about edTPA, as the state had recently released a report on the implementation of edTPA and there were hearings that morning regarding potential adjustments to the requirements. We also had a very productive collaborative exchange of course materials, with a subset of members sharing key assignments or activities– a component of our meetings which has become a highlight of our conferences for many. Finally, we held elections and are pleased to welcome to our executive board Mary Truxaw (University of Connecticut) and Jen Phaiah (Sacred Heart University)!

HAMTE (Indiana)

The Indiana Mathematics Education Research Symposium (IMERS) is a symposium by and for graduate students that takes place every year, usually the first Friday in March. IMERS is sponsored by faculty at Indiana University Bloomington, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, and Purdue University, and the Hoosier Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (HAMTE). The symposium was initially run by faculty to support graduate students and is now entirely run by graduate students. Some of the IMERS founders are Dr. Dionne Cross Francis, Dr. Hyunyi Jung, Dr. Signe Kastberg, Dr. Erik Tillema, Dr. Enrique Galindo, and Dr. Craig Willey. Many well-known mathematics educator researchers have joined IMERS as keynote speakers, such as Dr. Andy Norton, Dr. Gina Yoder, Dr. Susan Gregson, Dr. Alyson Lischka, Dr. Gloriana Gonzalez, Dr. Sarah Lubienski, Dr. Dana Cox, Dr. Nicole Joseph, and Dr. Greg Larnell.

On Friday, March 6, 2020, IMERS celebrated the tenth year of IMERS. The symposium was held in the School of Education on the IUPUI Campus and received special sponsorship from the Qualitative Studies in Education (QSE) journal. Dr. Danny Martin from the University of Illinois at Chicago was the keynote speaker and shared his insights in a talk titled“Mathematics Education in these Contentious Times.” There were 28 presentations, ranging between completed studies, studies under-design, and studies in-progress, presented by graduate students and faculty members from IUB, Purdue, University of Indianapolis, Ball State University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Middle Tennessee State University. These presentations represented a range of mathematics education research as presenters discussed student thinking and reasoning, cognitive and non-cognitive factors related to teacher education, large scale data assessments in mathematics education, mathematical knowledge of teaching, equity-related issues in K-12 college degree education, etc. 

IMERS attendees also had the opportunity to learn from a panel led by members of the editorial board of QSE who shared their experiences reviewing articles and how this has helped inform their perspectives of research personally, theoretically, and practically. The closing keynote session by Dr. Barbara Dennis from Indiana University Bloomington discussed the researcher’s contribution in their research by pointing towards the significance of “The ‘I’ in the Inquiry.” Barbara shared advice on how to make research decisions by keeping the interests of the participants foregrounded while trying to accommodate some of the existing research norms.

HAMTE also celebrated its Spring Retreat in coordination with IMERS this year. The majority of HAMTE members and a few new faces socialized and discussed the issues pertinent to HAMTE over the lunch. The discussions during lunch were planned and organized by Dr. Andrew Hoffman from Huntington University and Dr. Elizabeth Suazo-Flores from Purdue University. 

IMERS tenth year was a big success as everyone gained new insight for their upcoming research and teaching. We are grateful for the IMERS Planning Committee (Pavneet Kaur Bharaj, Sue Ellen Richardson, Dr. Jose Contreras, Lizhen Chen, Jenny Cox, and Andrew Gatza) and organizers of the sub-committees (Weverton Ataide Pinheiro, Desiree Ippolito, Hanan Alyami, and Lori Burch).

Every issue of AMTE Connections includes an affiliates-focused section called Affiliates Corner. Each affiliate and affiliate region may submit news items describing recent and upcoming activities and initiatives. ACC regional representatives will communicate the calls for submissions to all affiliate leaders.
