Press Release: Supporting AMTE Authors, Scholars, and Members

Regarding the volume Building Support for Scholarly Practices in Mathematics Methods

For Immediate Release: October 26, 2017

Raleigh NC, October 26, 2017 – The Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE) has as its mission to promote the improvement of mathematics teacher education K-12. In support of this mission, AMTE recently released volume 3 in their Professional Book Series, Building Support for Scholarly Practices in Mathematics Methods published by Information Age Publishing. A chapter in this volume (Political Conocimiento for Teaching Mathematics:  Why Teachers Need it and How to Develop It) and its lead author, Dr. Rochelle Gutiérrez, have been criticized recently in the media for the chapter’s content.

A key aspect of AMTE’s mission is to advance the learning of our community about mathematics education and mathematics teacher education. Advancing learning requires the consideration of a variety of perspectives, including perspectives that may be uncomfortable for one to hear and read. Therefore, AMTE explicitly supports the diversity of research and inquiry embodied in the book. AMTE also explicitly supports all authors and members who shared their scholarship in this volume, including Dr. Gutiérrez—a respected scholar in her field whose contribution to the book pushes us to consider new perspectives. We express this support because inquiry into challenging topics, no matter how uncomfortable to some, advances learning.

In all that AMTE does as a professional organization, including conference presentations, professional book series, journals and monographs, we maintain a high editorial standard that adheres to the field’s expectations for peer review and scientific accuracy. AMTE proudly stands by the volume Building Support for Scholarly Practices in Mathematics Methods, the work of its editors and authors, and our publishing partner Information Age Publishing.
