The Department of Mathematics invites applications for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the level of Assistant Professor in mathematics education effective August 2025. Tenure-track faculty in the Department generally teach 3 courses per semester, which may be face-to-face or online. Faculty also engage in service to the Department, College, University, and their field of expertise as well as maintain an active research program within their area of expertise. The successful candidate will teach courses for future preschool through 12th grade (Pre-K – 12) teachers as well as doctoral courses focused on collegiate mathematics education. The successful candidate is also expected to advise master’s and doctoral students.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics Education with a Master’s equivalent of graduate coursework in pure and/or applied mathematics OR

  • Ph.D. in Mathematics with a dissertation in mathematics education OR

  • Ph.D. in Education with a Master’s equivalent of graduate coursework in pure and/or applied mathematics.

  • ABD candidates will be considered but will need to complete their degree by August 2025.

They will also have demonstrated success teaching mathematics education at the collegiate level and possess an ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses related to mathematics education. The latter amounts to being able to achieve and maintain membership in Central Michigan University’s Educator Preparation Program (EPP), which requires ongoing work with the Pre-K - 12 population or pre- service teacher population. Evidence of an active research agenda related to mathematics education is expected. The successful candidate must also be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations, as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to those candidates who have:

  • experience mentoring or teaching graduate students

  • demonstrated ability to publish in peer-reviewed journals or conference proceedings

  • demonstrated ability to receive external funding

  • Pre-K – 12 teaching experience

Preference will also be given to those candidates who can teach:

  • courses focused on equity in mathematics education

  • methods and content courses for preservice secondary mathematics teachers incorporating the Michigan Department of Education’s (MDE’s) Core Teaching Practices

  • content courses for preservice elementary teachers incorporating MDE’s Core Teaching Practices.
