Location
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month faculty position in mathematics at the rank of assistant professor beginning August 2021.
Job Responsibilities:
- Teaching undergraduate courses supporting the major and the quantitative literacy goal in general education, as well as teaching graduate courses in mathematics and/or statistics at the master’s level with a standard teaching load of 18 semester hours per academic year for research-active faculty
- Establishing and maintaining an active program of research or other scholarly activities
- Participating in service activities, which may include working with local, regional, and national professional organizations; planning and assessment; and other activities needed for faculty governance at the department, college, and university levels.
- Additional teaching, scholarship, and service duties include:
- acquiring and retaining North Carolina teaching licensure
- teaching a first course in mathematics for elementary preservice teachers.
- facilitating professional development for teachers
- applying for and implementing funded projects
- observing student teachers
- advising undergraduate secondary education mathematics majors
- incorporating appropriate technology into mathematics content instruction
- developing curricula
Minimum Qualifications:
- An earned doctorate by August 2021 in mathematics education is preferred but consideration will be given to applicants with a doctorate in statistics education or mathematical sciences with demonstrated expertise in Mathematics Education.
- A minimum of 18 semester hours of graduate mathematics coursework
- A clear agenda for research and continuing scholarly activity
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in or documented potential for:
- teaching mathematics, statistics, or other content courses for pre-service and in-service teachers of K-12 mathematics
- educating students that have varied mathematical experiences and skills
- pursuing and using a variety of pedagogical strategies in the classroom
Areas of Interest: Experience or documented potential for
- Working in K-12 mathematics classrooms
- Having a teaching license in North Carolina (or another state)
- Teaching preservice and inservice mathematics teachers in an online and/or hybrid format
- Helping secondary education mathematics majors understand the connections between high school mathematics and their undergraduate mathematics courses
- Helping K-8 preservice teachers develop a deeper understanding of elementary and middle grades

- Teaching and mentoring undergraduates from diverse backgrounds
- Supporting ongoing institutional and departmental efforts to build, strengthen, support a diverse and inclusive academic atmosphere in the department, the university, and the community The Department and University
