Regional Setting
TCC is located in the greater Tacoma metropolitan area in the heart of Pierce County. It serves a fully diverse population of over 800,000 people and is surrounded by breathtaking ecosystems of snow-capped mountains, temperate rain forests, and vast ocean beaches. About the Department
Tacoma Community College’s math courses are designed to meet the full spectrum of pathways needs for its students to include Arts and Communication; Business; People and Communities; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); and Health and Wellness Pathways. The Department also offers developmental math courses from arithmetic through intermediate algebra in both classroom and computer mediated learning formats. The Department is also one of the few community colleges in the state to offer the national renowned Statway© sequence. These developmental courses make up half of our math offerings each quarter. Our students use graphing calculators in almost all college level math courses and incorporate various software platforms into the more advanced courses. The Department is committed to presenting mathematics from multiple perspectives and using student projects as an assessment tool.
Position Summary
This is a full-time tenured tracked position that entails preparing and teaching lectures in developmental math and college-level statistics courses including the Statway© sequence. This position reports to the Dean of Mathematics, Science & Engineering and supports the broader scope of academic pathways at TCC.
Primary Responsibilities
- Prepare and teach courses in developmental math and college-level statistics courses to include the Statway© sequence
- Develop, review, and revise curriculum
- Advise and mentor students, helping them to formulate sound educational and career plans
- Serve on college committees
- Participate in department, division, and college governance
- Participate in the recruitment and retention of all students
- Perform related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
- Masters degree in Mathematics, Math Education or closely-related field
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong academic preparation in mathematics
- Experience teaching courses in developmental math and college-level statistics courses
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in projects and initiatives
- Cultural self-awareness and cultural sensitivity to diverse populations of students and colleagues
Conditions of Employment
- Successful completion of a criminal history background check.
The Successful Candidate Must Demonstrate
- Understanding of, and a desire to teach in, a community college setting /environment
- Ability to effectively respond to the broad-ranging needs of a diverse student population
- Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty, and staff
- Experience in recruiting and retaining underrepresented students into science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
- Dedication to remaining current in the discipline
- Experience in reviewing and developing curriculum
- Experience with instructional technology and online learning management systems (e.g. Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle)
- Ability to teach a variety of courses
- Ability to facilitate learning in a variety of formats such as traditional classroom, online courses and an independent learning/tutorial environment
- Willingness to use contemporary teaching techniques, such as collaborative learning and student projects
- A commitment to helping students improve their writing and critical thinking skills and to assessing those skills
- A commitment to continuing professional development

Terms of Employment
This is a full-time tenure track faculty position contracted on an annual basis. Placement on the faculty salary schedule will be commensurate with educational background and experience. The salary will be prorated to reflect the actual contract days remaining in the academic year. A collective bargaining agreement exists, and membership in the TCC Federation of Teachers or payment of a service fee may be available. Evening and off campus assignments may be a part of the instructional load. Flexibility is required to meet the needs of the department. Degrees must be from accredited colleges or universities recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and verified by National Student Clearinghouse.
