The University of Wyoming offers both EdD and PhD doctoral programs in mathematics education. The PhD is a well-established program. There are currently 13 students in the program; 3 are full-time, funded students. Additional funding is being sought to support more PhD students in the near future. Students can complete their PhD coursework online. An objective in the PhD program is to involve students in research and/or teaching experiences that are relevant to their career goals. There are currently 12 students in the EdD degree program. The EdD program was launched in Fall 2021, it has an applied focus for practitioners (e.g., teachers!) interested in solving a problem of practice that they identify in their local context (e.g., school). The aim of the EdD program is to produce graduates who are leaders and innovators in mathematics education (broadly defined), equipped with cutting-edge applied research skills, creative and innovative visions for mathematics education, mathematics curricular expertise, and a commitment to issues of equity, inclusion, and social responsibility. The EdD program aligns with the framework for the Professional Doctorate in education specified by the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED), of which the College of Education at the University of Wyoming, is a member. The EdD program is offered completely online.

In both the PhD and EdD degree programs, candidates complete courses aimed at developing leaders and researchers in mathematics education with strong theoretical and historical backgrounds. Candidates in the programs learn inquiry-based teaching practices that support meaningful learning experiences for all students, particularly those in historically marginalized groups. Candidates become familiar with a wide variety of research designs and methods of inquiry. In this way, candidates are prepared to conduct research (PhD) or address a problem of practice (EdD) in diverse educational settings with a strong background in mathematical content, pedagogy, and assessment.
