This program is designed for graduate students interested in specializing in mathematics teaching and learning in grades 6-14. Our innovative approach assumes that a deep understanding of mathematics is fundamental to teaching math, engaging in mathematics education research, and supporting reform in mathematics education. The program encompasses three major strands: mathematics, mathematics education, and preparing mathematics teachers for grades 6-14. This program is suited for:
- those with graduate-level mathematics experience who want to focus on research in mathematics education and pursue a career as a Research in Undergraduate Mathematics Education (RUME) scholar, and
- secondary mathematics teachers who want to continue their education and transition into mathematics leadership roles in K-12 education or a faculty position in higher education.
Additionally, many of our students receive teaching assistant-ships (T.As) to help offset living costs and some fees. We provide a tuition waiver for all T.As during the first four years of the program (i.e., no tuition is paid by the graduate student; however, insurance and other student fees are the responsibility of the student).
Graduates of the program will be equipped to teach mathematics at various levels, conduct research, contribute to efforts to improve mathematics education for all students, and serve as leaders in mathematics education.
