The UCSC PhD program started in 2003 and focuses on research on learning and teaching for underserved students. The program in "Mathematics and Science Education" is one of three specializations in the department. Students in this specialization apply tools and perspectives from a range of fields and
disciplines, including mathematics education, science education, cognitive science, anthropology, linguistics, psychology, and sociology to focus on the following topics:
* Cognitive studies of learning and teaching in mathematics and science
* Diversity and equity in mathematics and science education
* How language and culture are implicated in teaching and learning mathematics and science.
