The Mathematics Teacher Educator (MTE) Editorial Team is delighted to preview what the journal will offer in 2025. All four articles in the February issue, consistent with AMTE goals, support mathematics teacher educators in strengthening our research-based practices. Orr introduces us to MTE activism, which captures how our work extends and transcends intellectual and practitioner activism. Sharing an idea for use with early childhood educators, Kaufman and Moldavan provide ways to support preservice teachers’ use of diverse picture books to develop mathematical consciousness as they design social justice mathematics lessons. Hohensee et al. share an instructional sequence in using strip diagrams with elementary preservice teachers to support algebraic reasoning beyond dependence on symbols. The statistical investigations offered by Fernandes et al. provide opportunities for middle and secondary preservice teachers to discuss systematic racism as they connect statistical results with broader institutional factors that impact policing. The editorial by Kate Johnson delves into the work of humanizing the review process.
Looking ahead to what you will find in future issues, we are happy to report that our Special Call: Supporting Teachers to Engage Traditionally Marginalized Learners received an unexpectedly high number of 122 abstract submissions. The decisions were difficult as so many submissions were worthy of consideration. After members of the editorial team reviewed entries and deliberated, 20 author teams were invited to submit full manuscripts. We also encouraged many other authors to consider sharing their intended manuscripts as regular submissions to MTE.
Full manuscripts invited for the Special Call that are received within the submission window of January 15 to March 1, 2025 will undergo the typical MTE review process, as do all MTE article manuscripts. As outcomes of the process, each of these manuscripts may be accepted for publication, declined for publication, or recommended for revision followed by another round of review. Accepted papers will be published as timing and space allow rather than confined to a single special issue. We expect articles from this Special Call will appear in different issues of the journal across approximately two years. Manuscripts accepted as part of the Special Call will be designated as such regardless of publication date.
The quality of the journal continues to depend on the authors and reviewers. We welcome AMTE members who wish to review for either the Special Call or our regular submissions to volunteer to review through the online review and submission system. Now having moved into the role of Editor in Chief of MTE, I (Rose) am deeply aware of how much the journal and editorial team benefitted from Past Editor Mike Steele’s experience and input and from Kate Johnson’s ongoing commitment as Associate Editor. We are also fortunate to have the incoming team of Allyson Hallman-Thrasher, Rachael Brown, and Amber Candela already onboard, along with Editorial Assistants Emily Hale and Christian Kwame Kpotosu. We look forward to serving you well in 2025.
