Highlights from the AMTE 2025 Annual Conference

On February 6-8, 2025, AMTE hosted our Twenty-Ninth Annual Conference in Reno, NV. AMTE had 525 registrants for this year’s conference (472 in-person attendees, 35 virtual attendees, and 18 K-12 Saturday only attendees). Of the total attendees registered, 142 were first timers. There were just under 500 presenters providing 191 sessions. The poster session was held Thursday afternoon where 27 posters were shared. Throughout the conference, there were opportunities to visit and catch up with colleagues and meet new ones during meals, receptions, and breaks.

The opening session of the conference was titled, “Moving Beyond Transactional Relationships in Educational Spaces.” Presenters included Beth Herbel-Eisenmann, Michigan State University; Nicol Howard, University of Redlands; Lateefah Id-Deen, Kennesaw State University; Carlos Lopez Leiva, University of New Mexico; and Farshid Safi (Moderator), University of Central Florida.

This year, there were two Judith E. Jacobs Lectures. On Thursday, Dorothy Y. White, University of Georgia (the 2024 Judith E. Jacobs Lecture Recipient) gave a lecture titled “Navigating Oz: My Journey with Three Essential Companions.” On Friday, Robert Q. Berry, University of Arizona, gave this year’s Judith E. Jacobs Lecture titled “Drawing Lessons From History as We Navigate the Present: Learning From Mathematics Educators Who Navigated the U.S. Civil Rights Movement”. We thank all of these keynote speakers for sharing their time and expertise with those attending this year’s conference.

During the conference, exhibitors provided materials and information of interest to members. Gold Sponsors included CPM Educational Program and Math Learning Center. This year’s Silver Sponsor was the Maier Math Foundation and Bronze Sponsors included Budapest Semesters in Mathematics Education and NCSM: Leadership in Mathematics Education. Other Exhibitors included CherryPot and TODOS: Mathematics for ALL! as well as AMTE Membership Committee, Publications Division, MTEP: Mathematics Teacher Education Partnership and Get the Facts Out Task Force. We thank each of these exhibitors for contributing to the success of the conference.

At a Thursday evening reception, more than 100 graduate students, early career faculty, and AMTE leaders had an opportunity to meet and talk with each other. Additionally, for the first time, AMTE hosted a reception for LGBTQIA+ Scholars and for a fourth year, a reception for BIPOC Scholars where attendees could gather to connect and network.

The Business Meeting was held during lunch on Friday where members were encouraged to make plans to attend the Thirtieth AMTE Conference, which will be held in Portland, Oregon at the Portland Marriott Downtown Waterfront on February 5-7, 2026. Please look for an announcement about the Call for Proposals on the AMTE website sometime later in March.

The planning and on-site logistical details were handled by the Conferences Committee, led by Cynthia Taylor as AVP of Conferences from Millersville University of Pennsylvania. The 2025 Program Committee was led by Nirmala Naresh from the University of North Texas. Many thanks go to the local arrangement co-chairs Diana Moss and Glenn Waddell, Jr. from the University of Nevada, Reno and all of their colleagues who helped with on-site registration and support.
