Affiliate News
Thanks to everyone who attended the Affiliate session at the AMTE Conference in New Orleans. The committee will be meeting to go over the data but you may view what was shared on the JamBoard. In addition, we are very happy to share that the following affiliates won the Annual Affiliate Award (A3) of $80: California, Georgia, New York, Florida, and Missouri. For each, we need the President’s name and phone number so the funds may be disbursed by the AMTE Treasurer. Send this information to your regional representative or Pam Bailey (prbailey@marybaldwin.edu) as soon as possible.
The due date for affiliate annual dues has been changed. Annual affiliate dues for the calendar year 2024 will be due by December 31, 2023. Late dues will apply for dues paid after the due date.
We also welcome two new regional representatives: Rebecca Borowski for the West region and Johanna Massey for the Southeast II region. We also appreciate everything that Diana Moss and Jennifer Fillingim did in their service on the committee as they supported the many affiliates in their respective regions.
If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to your regional representative or myself.
Best of wishes,
Pam Bailey
KAMTE (Kentucky)
In response to the pandemic, KAMTE started hosting in the fall of 2020 a virtual summit for preservice K-12 teachers in KY. KAMTE continued hosting this conference every semester. In the fall of 2022, KAMTE collaborated with HAMTE to increase the range of their virtual conference. Members of both boards planned and hosted the conference together. Our conference focused on K-12 preservice math teachers and included K-12 talks along with breakout sessions focusing on elementary (grades K-5) and secondary (grades 6-12). We have been fortunate to have leading mathematics educators from around the country give our keynote sessions. This fall, Dr. Denise Spangler was our keynote speaker, and she talked about “Purposeful Questioning with High Cognitive Demand Tasks.” Our grade band breakout sessions featured Dr. Beth MacDonald and Dr. Hilary Tanck speaking on “Number Talks: Teachers’ Use of Questions, Students’ Agency, and Teacher Planning” and Dr. Jean Lee speaking about “Using Project-Based Learning to Thrive in Your Teaching Journey.” To celebrate our first collaboration, we created “Engage”, shorter sessions in which a speaker from each state shares practical, engaging, activities where our preservice teachers will leave the session with some inspiration and some tangible ideas to use. For example, at the Fall conference, Dr. Kate Marin from the University of Louisville shared meaningful warm-ups such as “What do you notice and what do you wonder?” or “Slow reveal graphs”. Dr. Patrick Eggleton from Taylor University did a session beginning with a basic piece of paper to then fold and tear a complete tangram set. There are also networking opportunities for both pre-service teachers and faculty during the lunch hour as well as opportunities for students to virtually present a poster or slide. We are currently in the planning stages for our second joint conference to be held on March 31.
AMTE-NC (North Carolina)
The 2022-2023 academic year has been a busy one for the North Carolina Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators [AMTE-NC] affiliate! We kicked off the year with our annual Back to School event, hosted by NC State University in Raleigh. We were joined by a panel of various stakeholders from across the state to discuss the status of teaching and learning mathematics in North Carolina. It was great to be in community and start the year off on a positive note. In November, we held our fifth annual pre-service teacher poster session during the NC Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference. Thirteen pre-service teachers representing four different institutions shared mathematics task ideas appropriate for grades K-12. As we move into the spring semester, we are working on the third volume of our AMTE-NC Newsletter, a member benefit led by our editor Lanre Oriowo, and we have already started planning for our Fall 2023 events.
