The Conference and Annual Program Committees are excited about the 25th AMTE conference!
Although things may not look exactly the same for the 25th Annual Conference as they have in the past, members can still look forward to a great program with opportunities to share their work, (re)connect with colleagues, and celebrate AMTE's 25th Annual Conference!
Conference proposal notifications have typically been sent out by now, but due to the uncertainty introduced by the pandemic, AMTE leadership has made the decision to delay notifications about 2021 conference proposals until early September. This additional time will allow the Board of Directors, Conference Committee, and Program Committee the time we need to work out additional details about the conference. We are committed to providing the best possible conference experience for our members, while also ensuring everyone’s health and safety. The change to the timing of acceptances will also result in changes to the registration windows. Information will be forthcoming.
We are excited, however, to announce some conference highlights!
The opening session, 2020. Perfect Vision? Perfect Hindsight? Are We Ready to Reimagine Mathematics Teacher Education?, will feature the following panelists:
● Naomi Jessup, Assistant Professor, College of Education, Georgia State University
● Joel Amidon, Associate Professor, School of Education, University of Mississippi
● Sandra Crespo, Professor of Mathematics Education, College of Education, Michigan State University
The opening plenary session is designed to engage conference attendees in collective reflection. The panelists will challenge us, as individuals and as an AMTE community, to consider ways to use the opportunity that the insights of 2020 have presented us to bridge and support students, families, teachers, mathematics teacher educators, schools, school systems, and communities. Panelists will discuss structures that have been barriers in the past and structures that need to be in place in order to support the important work of preparing teachers and students within an educational and political landscape that is constantly changing. A full description is available online.
In addition, we are pleased to announce the 2021 Judith Jacobs Lecturer, Dr. Marta Civil, Professor of Mathematics Education and the Roy F. Graesser Chair in the Department of Mathematics at The University of Arizona. Her research looks at cultural, social, and language aspects in the teaching and learning of mathematics; participation in the mathematics classroom; connections between in-school and out-of-school mathematics; and parental engagement in mathematics. With respect to AMTE, she has served as the AVP for Equity and is currently one of the co-AVPs for the STaR Fellows Program. She was one of the co-editors for Cases for Mathematics Teacher Educators: Facilitating Conversations about Inequities in Mathematics Classrooms in the AMTE professional book series. More information can be found on the conference website.
We are committed to making the 2021 Annual Conference the high-quality and engaging experience you have come to expect from AMTE. We thank you for your patience and understanding as we try to figure out the best path forward, and we look forward to seeing you at the 2021 Annual Conference in February!
