A lot has happened since the last issue of Connections was published! Who would have thought that we’d all be working from home, teaching our classes online, and trying to find some balance between work, our personal life, self-care, and the many unexpected obligations some of our members now have? Yet amidst all of the changes and challenges, our work as an organization has carried on. A number of members of the AMTE leadership team, committees, and communications team helped coordinate AMTE’s efforts to support members as they adapted their work in light the COVID-19 pandemic. It truly took a village and we greatly appreciate everyone’s efforts! If you haven’t already viewed the materials that were put together, check out the complete list on the AMTE website.
The board continues to meet monthly and has taken on several issues, in addition to board members sharing reports of the ongoing work in each division. Some behind-the-scenes work has also taken place to update our database and communications. A few highlights are shared below.
Strategic Priorities: A subcommittee of the board has consolidated the feedback related to strategic priorities that was received from members prior to and during the annual conference. The board is currently working to draft strategic priorities for AMTE, both short and long term.
Judith Jacobs Lecturer: The Board considered a recommendation from the Awards Committee regarding the 2021 Judith Jacobs Lecture and their recommendation passed unanimously. We are pleased to announce that Marta Civil, University of Arizona has been selected as the 2021Judith Jacobs Lecturer!
STaR: STaR will meet virtually this year, with the design of the meeting to be similar to the in-person events in previous years. A follow-up meeting with the 2020 cohort will also be held in Summer 2021. Although we are disappointed that we will not be able to gather together physically, we are excited about beginning our work with a great group of STaR fellows!
Get the Facts Out: AMTE is finalizing an agreement to partner with Get the Facts Out, an NSF funded project (PI, Wendy Adams, Colorado School of Mines) to change the conversation around STEM teacher recruitment. If you are interested in getting involved in this work, watch your email for more information coming soon!
Updated Communications: You may have recently noticed that your email from AMTE looks different. We are switching to a new email system that draws directly from our member database, making the sending of emails easier and ensuring that our mailing list is always current. If you have not received communications lately, please check your spam folder and mark the AMTE emails as safe.
Upcoming Opportunities: While you are hopefully finding some time to relax and reenergize this summer, be sure to look for and consider the following opportunities:
- AMTE Awards Nominations due June 15. This year we will award the Excellence in Teaching in Mathematics Teacher Education Award and Early Career Award.
- Elementary Mathematics Specialists Scholarship Applications due June 15.
- Calls for Nominations (due June 15) and Applications (due August 15) for Board Member-at-Large.
- Susan Gay Graduate Student Conference Travel Scholarship Applications due September 1.
- 2021 Annual AMTE Conference—Registration should open in mid-August.
Have a wonderful summer!
Respectfully submitted,
