For those interested in the mathematical education of teachers, the University of Michigan Mathematics Teaching and Learning to Teach Project offers four-day institutes designed to develop participants’ understanding of Specialized Content Knowledge (SCK). These Institutes offer a rare opportunity to learn about mathematics that is unique to the work of teaching, as well as gain expertise in the development of SCK instructional tasks and assessment items. The institutes emphasize cross-community collaboration, providing support for mathematicians, teacher educators, education researchers, and others to collaborate and communicate across institutional boundaries. Each institute culminates in the development of a contract between participants and institute leaders for ongoing work tailored to suit each group’s particular interests and goals. Past participants have appreciated opportunities to collaborate across communities, the practical focus on the development of tasks, and the chance to develop knowledge and skill related to SCK.
