The Twentieth Annual Conference will be held at Hotel Irvine in Irvine, CA. There will be some special activities as we celebrate this milestone 20th conference.
The conference hotel room rate is $169 for a single or double room. As cancellations are made, there may still be guestrooms available at our special conference rates. Hotel reservations can be made by calling 888-230-4452 Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Pacific time or Saturday, Sunday, and Holidays 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Pacific time. Information about shuttles from Orange County/John Wayne Airport (airport code SNA) to Hotel Irvine will be on the AMTE website in January.
Program information will be updated over the next few weeks and a final program will be posted before January 1.
Conference Highlights
Thursday–January 28th
The opening session presented by Ed Dickey, University of South Carolina, will begin at 9:00 a.m. The title of his presentation is “Rebranding the Teaching Profession: Ideas and Strategies for Effective Recruitment of Mathematics Teachers” and more information can be found on the AMTE website.
Other session highlights include a presentation by last year’s Early Career Award Winner, Eva Thanheiser, a presentation by Ruth Heaton, this year’s winner of the Nadine Bezuk Award for Excellence in Leadership and Service in Mathematics Teacher Education, and a session on the proposed CAEP Elementary Standards led by Skip Fennell. From 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., presenters for 30 posters will be available to share their work in the First AMTE Poster Session.
On Thursday, breakfast is on your own. Lunch and afternoon break will be provided and are included in the registration fee. Dinner Thursday evening is on your own.
Friday–January 29th
Friday’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included with the registration fees along with an afternoon break.
At 7:00 a.m., the Advocacy Breakfast will feature a panel of policy experts, including Ken Krehbiel, Associate Executive Director for Communications at NCTM, and Jim Lewis and Karen King from the National Science Foundation. Conference sessions will begin on Friday at 8:00 a.m. Session highlights include a session on AMTE’s Standards of Mathematics Teacher Preparation led by Nadine Bezuk, Jennifer Bay-Williams, Douglas Clements, and Gary Martin.
Beginning at 4:45 p.m., the Judith Jacobs Lecture entitled, "Mathematics Teacher Education: Normal Schools to Now. What’s the Fit and Future for AMTE?, will be given by Francis (Skip) Fennell, Emeritus Professor, McDaniel College. See the AMTE website for more information about the talk.
Saturday–January 30th
Breakfast and lunch are included with the registration fees. Members of AMTE affiliates will meet during breakfast.
Conference sessions will begin on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. The AMTE Business Meeting will be held during lunch. The conference will conclude by 1:15 p.m.
