The first annual conference of AMTE was held February 14-15,1997, at the Sheraton Washington Hotel in Washington, DC. The 125 participants declared the conference a success. Over the two days, participants heard from speakers at 33 sessions. The keynote address, given by James Leitzel, University of New Hampshire, focused on educating the future teacher of mathematics (T. F. TOM). Our thanks to Exxon for their support of several aspects of the conference, including the keynote address.
New resources, programs, courses, and practices were shared by the speakers in the concurrent sessions. These sessions as well as the morning and afternoon breaks provided opportunities for participants to network and interact, to raise issues, and to share ideas. The conference proceedings will be available on the AMTE web site,
http://www.ceemast.csupomona.edu/amte/ We are grateful for the support of Texas Instruments who provided a bag for each conference participant and the refreshments at the Friday night reception. Our appreciation also goes to Allyn and Bacon who provided refreshments at one of the breaks during the conference. On Sunday, February 16, a special joint ATE/AMTE Clinic was held. This clinic was provided by Mary Hatfield, Gary Bitter, and Nancy Edwards, all of Arizona State University, and gave participants information about using a CD-ROM to show teaching vignettes that build teachers' understanding about changing practices in the teaching and learning of mathematics.
Conference participants gave overwhelming support for a conference next year. Planning is already underway for late January 1998. Look for a call for proposals on AMTE's web site and in this newsletter.
AMTE's Third Annual Conference will be held on January 22 through 24, 1999, at the Hyatt O'Hare Hotel in Rosemont, IL just outside of Chicago, in conjunction with the Annual Conference of Teachers Teaching with Technology (T-cubed). More information will follow. Save the dates!
