The Mathematics Specialization for middle school majors in the Department of Mathematics at Illinois State University is part of an undergraduate degree program in the College of Education. Students majoring in junior high/middle school education are required to complete two fields of study, each of at least 18 hours, in one of the following areas: Art, English (Language Arts), Industrial Technology, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Reading, Science, and Social Sciences. The Mathematics Specialization requires 30 semester hours taken from the following courses:

- MAT 204 Geometry for K-8 Teachers
- MAT 302 Methods of Teaching Mathematics in Grades 5-8
- MAT 306 Teaching K-8 Mathematics with Calculators and Computers
- MAT 309 Problem Solving in Grades K-8
- MAT 312 Probability and Statistics for K-8 Teachers
- MAT 314 Concepts of Calculus for K-8 Teachers
- MAT 315 Mathematical Modeling for Middle School Teachers
- MAT elective This course must be an approved content course in mathematics (min 3 hours)
- MAT 205 Modern Algebra for K-8 Teachers
- MAT 120 Finite Mathematics
- MAT 144 Pre Calculus
- MAT 145 Calculus I
- MAT 146 Calculus II
- Others approved by the Department
