Enhancing Statistics Teacher Education with E-Modules [ESTEEM] Workshop for Mathematics Teacher Educators
Houston, Texas
Wednesday, February 7, 2018

Are secondary teachers from your institution prepared to meet the curricular demands of teaching content in data analysis and statistics?

CONTEXT: ESTEEM is an NSF-supported project focused on: 1) creating online resources for statistics preservice teacher education, including datasets, online tools, and videos of teaching, 2) designing e-modules with these resources, and 3) implementing e-modules in undergraduate mathematics teacher education programs.

WORKSHOP: This workshop will be held one day prior to the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators Annual Conference. During the workshop, participants will learn to use CODAP (Common Online Data Analysis Platform), an open-access tool for investigating data, and discuss critical issues around teaching statistics to preservice teachers. Participants will be introduced to the project’s e-modules and learn how to implement an e-Module entitled “What is Statistics and How Should We Teach It?” Other e-modules developed by the project will focus on inferential reasoning, statistical association, and comparing distributions.

TIME: 9:00 AM -- 5:00 PM CT on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Westin Galleria Houston.

AUDIENCE: The workshop is intended for individuals who teach content and/or pedagogy courses for preservice secondary teachers that include a focus on data analysis and statistics. The ESTEEM materials are intended to be used in online or hybrid learning environments, but they can also supplement face-to-face instruction. Participants should be willing to field test ESTEEM materials in their course(s) during the 2018-19 academic year and participate in the ESTEEM project’s research and evaluation efforts, such as interviews and/or surveys.

APPLICATION: Interested individuals may apply by completing the form at http://tinyurl.com/ESTEEMHouston2018 The application deadline is Monday, September 25, 2017.

SUPPORT: Participants will receive a $500 stipend, including a $300 participation stipend and up to $200 to support hotel accommodations. Lunch will also be provided during the workshop.
