The College of Education at Wayne State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Urban STEM Education to begin in August 2019. The successful candidate will join the Division of Teacher Education (TED) that attracts faculty, staff, and students who are committed to urban education and social justice. TED’s Science and Mathematics Education programs offer a full slate of initial teaching certification, undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Our Ph.D. program in Educational Studies with the STEM concentration prepares researchers and leaders in curriculum theory, policy, inquiry, and practice.

The successful candidate will contribute to a strong tradition of conducting substantial research in STEM, science and/or mathematics education; securing external research funding; teaching undergraduate and graduate courses; mentoring and advising students; and providing university, state, and professional service. Applications are encouraged from candidates whose research and teaching programs are in the areas of teacher education, teaching, learning, and assessment, with a focus on urban education, race, class, inclusion, and social justice.

Our faculty is actively involved in grant-funded projects for research and program development, supported by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Education, Michigan Department of Education, and other agencies. We collaborate in research and teaching partnerships with school districts and communities in the metropolitan Detroit area and beyond. Aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics’ Standards and Principles, our research and teaching adopt a variety of epistemological, pedagogical, and assessment approaches inspired by the learning sciences.

Located in the cultural center of Detroit midtown, Wayne State University (WSU) is within walking distance of major museums, theaters, and Engagement from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. WSU’s 200-acre campus is home to 13 schools and colleges music venues. It is one of only two public urban universities with the highest possible designation for both Research and Community and nearly 28,000 students. WSU offers over 350 academic programs across the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels.
